Increasing student engagement – measuring myself against Scott Moore

14 05 2010

I’ve been doing some reading ahead for my course.  I fell upon the article in Educause regarding Reaching and Engaging Today’s Learner.  Scott Moore is an educator that found he needed to make some changes to his approach to reflect the reality of the net generation.  His video lists the steps he took to improve student learning and engagement.

I see an opportunity to use his ideas as a measuring stick for my own teaching practices.  I have felt the same need to change my teaching approach in the past 2 years.  The MET program has been a further catalyst in this need to re-invent my approach.  When I started teaching adults, I created courses that students wanted to enroll in.  I created my own market.  Nowadays, I don’t get the sense the students are signing up for my class because they want to learn about Business.  It’s more that there are fewer courses available as a result of surplus situations in recent years.  I have managed to increase the Business sections from 5 to 11 per year.  That is a measure of success.  But I really feel I need to bring my courses in line with the increased availability of social networking in our classrooms.

I want to list Scott Moore’s suggestions and refer to them in the next few months to see how I am progressing.

Still no grade…

But I started etec 522 this week.  I just emailed the prof to see what’s up with the grade.  Etec 522 is being held entirely on a blog.  That will be different.  So far we’ve only introduced ourselves.  There are quite a few interesting people.  I am looking forward to getting more deeply into it.

One more down

Well, I finished Etec 565 last weekend.  I’ve been posting a little more this week, just commenting on other people’s Moodle sites and blogs.  I have to say I am impressed with the sites other students have created.  So many great ideas!  My favourites include an avatar that speaks on the splash page and a glossary functions.  Someone else suggested a link to an exterior blog or wiki.  All ideas I will have to try.

The next course begins May 10 – Etec 522 – Business Ventures in elearning.  I am looking forward to that.  I’ve heard good things.  And hopefully it will be hands on as well more than theory.

After this course, I will be taking Etec 511 and 512 in the fall to complete the certificate.  I am tempted to continue on but haven’t decided if it will have a return on the investment or not.  Things are difficult at work with so many surpluses.  I am glad I only took a 6 months leave of absence.  At least my position is guaranteed.  As for promotions, changes, move to the board – that is up in the air for the next while.  One year at a time, I suppose.

I’ll miss Dilip, Clare, Tom and a few others.  They’ve been great to work with but they are graduating or going on to other courses to graduate very soon.
